How much does it cost to replace a door?
The cost of replacing a door will vary depending on several different factors. These include the material, the door style, the size of the door, locking system, additional glass features, type of hardware, and whether the structure of the existing door space will need adapting.
What is the difference between composite and uPVC doors?
Composite doors are made from a combination of different materials. These may include a solid timber core, insulating foam, and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) outer layer. uPVC doors are made from one material, unplasticized polyvinyl chloride.
Composite doors are generally more expensive than uPVC doors. Composite doors, however, offer better levels of security and thermal performance, and are available in a wider variety of styles and designs than uPVC doors.
How secure are composite doors?
Composite doors are the most secure entrance door. They are designed to withstand any attempts at forced entry and feature high security multi-point locking systems as standard.
Do I need planning permission for new doors?
No. In general, door replacements do not require planning permission. If your new door is part of an extension project, however, planning permission may be required for the project as a whole.
Can you paint external doors?
This depends on the material. Timber doors can be painted. Composite, uPVC, and aluminium doors do not require painting.
How long does a uPVC door last?
On average, a uPVC door will last between 20 – 25 years. This may be reduced or prolonged depending on the level of care the door receives and the location of the door (doors in exposed areas will become weathered more quickly than those in sheltered locations).
What is the best patio door option?
This will depend on your expectations and personal preference. Bifold doors provide the largest opening span and usually have the slimmest frames. Sliding doors do not impact floor space and provide the largest expanses of glass. French doors can be configured to open either in or out and are popular with all types of property.
